A product grade refers to a  refined product with a very specific quality specification that distinguishes it from other version of the same product

For example, gasoline typically comes in many different grades varying in octane, sulfur, and vapor pressure.  

Grade variations typically are adapting to different regulatory requirements, climates, or engine types.
