Pipeline system description
The Mainline system consists of many interconnected lines:
Line 1 - an 18-to-20-inch-diameter crude oil and refined products pipeline, originating at Enbridge’s Edmonton Terminal in Edmonton, AB, and terminating at Enbridge’s Superior Terminal, in Superior, WI. Length: 1,098 miles (1,767 km), Average annual capacity: 237,000 barrels per day
Line 2A - a 24-inch-diameter crude oil pipeline, originating at Enbridge’s Edmonton Terminal near Edmonton, AB, and terminating at Enbridge’s Cromer Terminal near Cromer, MB. Combined, Line 2A and Line 2B form Line 2, which travels about 1,100 miles (1,770 km) from Edmonton to Superior, WI. Length: 600 miles (966 km). Average annual capacity: 442,000 barrels per day.
Line 2B - a 24-to-26-inch-diameter crude oil pipeline, originating at Enbridge’s Cromer Terminal near Cromer, MB, and terminating at Enbridge’s Superior Terminal near Superior, WI. Combined, Line 2B and Line 2A form Enbridge's Line 2, which travels about 1,100 miles (1,770 km) from Edmonton, AB to Superior. Length: 502 miles (808 km). Line 3 (3A/93) - a 34-to-36-inch-diameter crude oil pipeline, originating at Enbridge’s Edmonton Terminal near Edmonton, AB, and terminating at Enbridge’s Superior Terminal near Superior, WI. In Canada, construction wrapped up on the Line 3 Replacement Program—spanning a 665-mile (1,070-km) portion of Line 3 between between Hardisty, Alberta and Gretna, Manitoba—in May 2019. The 36-inch-diameter replacement pipeline began commercial service in December 2019. In the U.S., the US$4-billion replacement initiative, known as the Line 3 Replacement Project, consisted of replacing 34-inch pipe with new 36-inch pipe for 13 miles in North Dakota, 337 miles in Minnesota, and 14 miles in Wisconsin. Construction wrapped up in October 2021. With project construction complete, the portion of the line from Hardisty, AB to Superior is now known as Line 93; the portion from Edmonton to Hardisty is known as Line 3A.
