Marathon is a a large independent refining company with operations primarily in the US.
Marathon was formed by the separation of the downstream business from Marathon Oil (now an independent upstream company).
Marathon built its refinery portfolio through organic investment (under Marathon Oil), individual asset acquisitions, and mergers with Ashland Oil (1998) and Andeavor (2018).
Marathon's refinery portfolio is entirely in the US, where it has a strong presence in most of the regional markets. Traditionally it has been one of the major players in the Midwest, where it has an extensive refining portfolio that is highly integrated with product pipelines and fuel retail.
