Strathcona refinery

The Strathcona refinery is a large, medium complexity refinery located in Edmonton,Alberta in Western Canada.

It is 70% owned and operated by ExxonMobil through its Canadian subsidiary Imperial Oil.

Strathcona is a medium complexity plant with asphalt for bottoms conversion, but also an FCC and a small base oil plant

Refinery history

1976 - New refinery commissioned on site of old Imperial Edmonton refinery

2025 - Adding a renewable diesel plant (20 kbpd) at a cost of $720MM.  Will use low-carbon hydrogen employing CCUS provided by Air Products. FEED for newplant by Fluor. Bio feedstock will be souced locally.
