In refining, HF is one of the two acids used as a catalyst in the alkylation process, the other being sulfuric acid.

Although HF units generally have better yields than sulfuric acid units, new alkylation units are almost exclusively sulfuric acid design. This comes from concern over the extreme toxicity of HF and the resulting costs for risk mitigation that go into using an HF unit.
