In refining, availability refers the processing capacity of a refinery or individual processing unit that is actually available to be used, as opposed to the name plate or design capacity.

There are several levels of capacity availability that refiners measure:

Mechanical availability - capacity that is physically operable given the hardware constraints of the plant

Operational availability - capacity that is operable given both mechanical availability and any operational constraints such as feedstock availability.
