Isomerization is a chemical process that changes the shape of a molecule, and as a result it chemical properties, without changing the size of the molecule

There are a number of isomerization processes employed in refining, including:

• C4 isomerization - converting normal butane to iso-butane

• C5/C6 isomerization - converting straight chained light naphtha to branched chain to increase its octane
