A glossary of common terms and abbreviations used in the industry, with links to more in-depth articles on key words
Gain -A common phenomenon in refinery where processing results in an increase in volume of product due to a change in density
Gasoil - a broad term that can refer to a range of intermediates and finished petroleum products, generally in the diesel or VGO range of distillation profile
Gas plant - a group of process units in a refinery that takes refinery gas from the distillation and other process units and separates out the various gas liquids
Gas scrubber - a refinery process unit that extracts the H2S from the other gas components using an amine solvent
Gasoline - one of the major petroleum products produced from processing crude oil in a petroleum refinery
Gas to liquid - a process for producing refinery fuels from natural gas instead of crude oil, using the Fischer-Tropsch process
Gippsland (crude) - a light, sweet crude grade produced in Australia
Girassol (crude) - a medium, sweet crude grade produced in Angola
Girbotol - a refinery process unit that extracts the H2S from the other gas components using an amine solvent
Grade (product) - A refined product with a very specific quality specification
Grade (crude) - A particular type of crude with specific qualities
Grane (crude) - a heavy, sweet crude grade produced in Norway
Green coke - raw pet coke as it comes directly from the coker, before it has received any further treating such as calcining
Griffin (crude) - a very heavy, sweet crude grade produced in Australia
GOHT - (Gasoil hydrotreater) a hydrotreater that reduces sulfur in VGO before feeding to an FCC
Green hydrogen - hydrogen that is produced from renewable sources with little to no CO2 emissions
Gross Margin - one common measure of refinery margin or economic performance
Group I base oil - the lowest quality base oils. These are made with straight run material that has only had solvent extraction processing
Group II base oil - petroleum-derived baseoil with some hydrocracked material, which makes them somewhat higher quality than group I base oil
Group III base oil - the highest quality petroleum-based base oil, produced entirely from hydrocracked material
Group 3 (market) - a regional petroleum product market covering the lower Midwest of the US (centered around Tulsa, OK)
Group IV base oil - non-petroleum synthetic base oils produced from poly-alpha-olefins
Group three - the regional spot market in the US covering the Midwest Plains states
GTL - (gast-to-liquid) a process for producing refinery fuels from natural gas instead of crude oil, using the Fischer-Tropsch process
Gulf Coast - (USGC) one of the major refining supply centers and spot market trading hubs
Gullfaks (crude) - a medium, sweet crude grade produced in Norway
