Shot coke is an undesirable grade of pet coke produced from a delayed coker (relative to the standard sponge coke grade).

The irregular structure of shot coke makes it difficult to handle and unacceptable for any specialty coke uses.

Refiners try to avoid the production of shot coke by controlling the quality of the vacuum resid feed to the coker.
