A batch process is one in which processing happens in discrete parcels or batches, rather than continuously (continuous process).

Most refining processes are continuous not batch processes. an important exception is a delayed coker, where the thermal reaction is continuous, but the accumulation of coke in the coke drums is a batch process requiring the drums to be taken out of service to be emptied.
