Higher heating value is a measure of the amount of heat generated from full combustion of a hydrocarbon and a return of all combustion products (including steam) to pre-combustion temperature. This is in contrast to lower-heating value which does not account for the heat contained in combustion products if not returned to per-combustion temperature.

Higher heating value is most relevant industrial combustion systems where maximum heat capture is possible.
