Mercaptan

Also known as:

Thiol

Mercaptans are highly odorous sulfur containing hydrocarbons that are often removed from light products such as LPG or jet fuel in a merox unit.

Mercaptans have a chemical structure that includes a hydrogen atom bonded to a sulfur atom bonded to a carbon atom, with the generic formula R-SH.

Mercaptans can be removed in hydrotreaters and can be sweetened in merox units.
