Philadelphia refinery

Philadelphia was a very large, medium complexity refinery comprised of two integrated sites (Point Breeze and Girard Point) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The plant was closed in 2019 after a major fire.

The refinery was owned and operated by a partnership between The Carlyle Group and Sunoco.

The refinery processed light sweet crude supplied from the international market by water and from domestic production by rail.

Refinery history

1870 - Point Breeze built by Atlantic refining

1920 - Girard Point built by Gulf Oil

1966 - Atlantic merges with Richfield to form ARCO

1982 - Gulf Oil (and Girard Point) acquired by Chevron

1985 - Investor acquires Point Breeze from ARCO and forms new Atlantic Oil Co

1988 - Sun acquires Atlantic Oil (and Point Breeze)

1994 - Sun acquires Girard Point from Chevron

1995 - Sunoco integrates two sites

2006 - VGO hydrotreater shut down and FCC gasoline hydrotreater added

2013 - PES acquires refinery

2020 - Refinery permanently closed after a major fire
