Flashing is the use of a drop in pressure to cause part of a hydrocarbon mixture to vaporize and separate from heavier material, remains in the liquid state. Typically this is done by directing the stream to a vessel maintained at lower pressure (falsh drum or tank) that has a vapor off-take pipe overhead and a liquid off-take line at the bottom.
